On Friday, the Cleveland Cavaliers will host the short-handed Golden State Warriors, which will be without Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins. Entering play, Cleveland is tied with the Brooklyn Nets for the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Golden State is in a four-way tie for the seventh-best record in the Western Conference. In this matchup, oddsmakers have the Cavaliers priced as 11.5-point home favorites on the spread.

Golden State Warriors
Curry, Green, Thompson, Wiggins OUT
Per Cleaning the Glass, the Warriors rank in the 11th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 15th percentile in defensive efficiency this season when playing with Curry, Green, Thompson, and Wiggins on the bench. In a sample size of 627 possessions this year, they are turning the ball over on 20.4% of their possessions and have struggled mightily on the glass.
Who will step up for the Warriors?
Jordan Poole (+5.4%) and Donte DiVincenzo (+4.7%) both see significant increases in usage with Curry, Green, Thompson, and Wiggins off of the floor. In these situations, Poole is averaging 28.9 points and 6.0 assists per 36 minutes. DiVincenzo is averaging 15.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per 36 minutes.
Beyond Poole and DiVincenzo, it is difficult to see where the rest of Golden State’s offensive production will come from. In last night’s overtime loss to the Boston Celtics, the team used only eight players – four of which are inactive for tonight’s contest in Cleveland. Kevon Looney and Anthony Lamb are likely to see expanded roles this evening, but there is not enough data to confidently predict their offensive output. It is worth noting that Lamb had three games earlier this month with 17 points or more.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Defend The Land
Cleveland owns the best home record in the entire Eastern Conference entering play on Friday. In their first 23 games at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, the Cavaliers are 19-4, ranking fourth in Net Rating – outscoring their opponents by 8.3 points per 100 possessions. Tonight, they get to play Golden State, missing four starters, with the rest of the roster having to play on the second-night of a back-to-back set after being in Boston on Thursday.
Mitchell listed as questionable
Per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, Donovan Mitchell participated in post-shootaround free throws this morning, a positive development for him possibly taking the court this evening. Still, Cleveland is capable of performing well this evening, regardless of whether Mitchell plays.
The Cavaliers rank in the 61st percentile in offensive efficiency and the 81st percentile in defensive efficiency with Mitchell on the court this year, compared to the 58th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 82nd percentile in defensive efficiency with him on the sidelines, per Cleaning the Glass.
Warriors vs. Cavaliers Prediction
No professional basketball team will try to lose a game on purpose, but the Golden State Warriors have clearly prioritized their long-term health over a possible win on Friday – sitting Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins.
Golden State had only eight players see the floor last night against the Boston Celtics, meaning that they only have four players active for tonight that played yesterday. One of those players is Jordan Poole, who logged a team-high 43 minutes.
Donte DiVincenzo is likely to be heavily involved in the offense this evening, with someone other than Poole needing to score and facilitate on the offensive end of the floor. Expect him to step up in this spot – take the over on his points prop.
- PICK: Donte DiVincenzo OVER 11.5 points (-128 at FanDuel)
