MLB Trend of the Day: Hot Power Hitters vs. Cold Pitchers

At FantasyLabs, we believe that we have the best daily fantasy sports tools and data available. We also realize that these tools and data are only as beneficial as our ability to communicate their functionality and worth.

With this in mind, our Trend of the Day series features articles that walk subscribers each weekday through an important trend, created with our free Trends tool. Also, shortly after you create a trend, you will be able to see it under the “My Trends” column in our Player Models.

MLB Trend of the Day: Hot Power Hitters vs. Cold Pitchers

With today’s FanDuel trend, I set out to create a screener that would lead to stacks. I wasn’t too worried about whether it would be a cash game trend or a tournament trend — I just wanted a team/game to focus on. Whether I use the trend for cash games or tournaments will have a lot to do with whether that game is chalky that day.

Step 1a: Stat Filters > ISO Month Percentage > 60-100
Step 1b: Stat Filters > Opp WHIP Percentile > 60-99*

ISO Percentile, Opp Pitcher WHIP Percentile 1

We’re off to a good start here, no doubt. I was a bit surprised to see the Plus/Minus jump that quickly with only two factors.

*A player’s percentile rank in regards to the opposing pitcher’s WHIP: The higher the WHIP, the higher the percentile rank

Step 2: Player Filter > Lineup Order > 1-4

ISO Percentile, Opp Pitcher WHIP Percentile 5

This will definitely lend the trend to cash game lineups, but it won’t always lend us to chalk, and that makes it OK for tournaments.

Step 3: Weather Details > Weather (Rating) > 70 – 100

ISO Percentile, Opp Pitcher WHIP Percentile 3

With a more manageable count in the trend, we have a Plus/Minus of +2.67 points, Consistency of 48.3 percent, and Upside of 22 percent.

ISO Percentile, Opp Pitcher WHIP Percentile 4

Ultimately, it shouldn’t be surprising that hot batters do well against cold pitchers in ideal weather.

Current Matches

For today, this trend spits back two mini-stacks playing in the same game: A) Khris Davis and Josh Reddick and B) Adrian Beltre and Ian Desmond. The Vegas data isn’t available yet for that game, but it will likely be a high-scoring affair.
