MLB Trend of the Day: Chasing Season-Long Upside via High Vegas Scores

At FantasyLabs, we believe that we have the best daily fantasy sports tools and data available. We also realize that these tools and data are only as beneficial as our ability to communicate their functionality and worth.

With this in mind, our Trend of the Day series features articles that walk subscribers each weekday through an important trend, created with our free Trends tool. Also, shortly after you create a trend, you will be able to see it under the “My Trends” column in our Player Models.

MLB Trend of the Day: Chasing Season-Long Upside via High Vegas Scores

Upside‘ is a word or idea often thrown around loosely but what does it mean from an analytical approach? At FantasyLabs we view it as a percentile rating of how often a player doubles his salary-based expected point total. Rostering these high-performing players should benefit both cash and tournament players, but how do we find them?

Perhaps Vegas data can help us successfully chase Upside. Let’s find out.

Step 1: Fantasy Year Filters > Season Upside > 25 to 100

MLB TOTD 08-08-16 (1)

We start by setting our first parameter to batters who reach their Upside in at least 25 percent of their outings.

Step 2: Vegas Filters > Vegas Score > 65 to 100

MLB TOTD 08-08-16 (2)

A Vegas Score of 65 or greater has historically proven to benefit batters.

Step 3: Vegas Filters > Runs > 5 to 7.7

MLB TOTD 08-08-16 (3)

Setting our current Vegas-implied run total to five runs or greater gives us the opportunity to chase high-scoring games that benefit our batters the most. It also significantly raises our Plus/Minus.

Putting it all together, we get a trend that surpasses expectations by 2.25 FanDuel points with 46.7 percent Consistency.

Current Matches

Our trend matches several players for tonight’s slate. Brandon Moss and Orlando Arcia are both projected to start in what looks like some high-scoring games. The trend also matches for Jeremy Hazelbaker and David Dahl, if they play tonight, so make sure to monitor our Lineups page closer to game time to see if they get the opportunity.

Good luck tonight!

Note: Our Player Models and Lineups page update in real time to give subscribers the most accurate information available. As Vegas totals change, the current player matches may also change after this article is published.
