Monday MLB DFS Breakdown: Yu Darvish or Julio Urias? (June 21)

Monday’s MLB DFS slate is a breather after double-digit slates dominated for a good stretch, featuring a six-game main slate that locks at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Pitchers

Three pitchers top FanDuel’s pricing:

  • Yu Darvish (R) $10,000, SD vs LAD
  • Frankie Montas (R) $9,500, OAK @ TEX
  • Julio Urias (L) 9,000, LAD @ SD

Dodgers vs. Padres is a must-watch whenever they play, and the rivalry continues in San Diego. Yu Darvish and Julio Urias have been excellent for their respective teams and have pitched to expectations. The difference between the two in terms of DFS preference is their offensive support.

The Dodgers have the best Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) in road games against right-handed pitching. Los Angeles is also top five in average, walk rate, OBP, OPS, ISO, Weighted Runs Above Average, Weighted On Base Average, and BABIP (a legitimate concern long-term).

The Padres are one of 13 teams with a wRC+ under 100 against left-handers at home, and if you removed teams at 98 or above (close to average), they are one of nine teams below average. Lefties have been hittable on the road and the Padres have yet to consistently figure them out.

Both pitchers rate as Bales Model top three options on FanDuel and DraftKings and the game is tied for the lowest projected game total.

Frankie Montas and the Athletics are not as big of favorites against the Rangers as one would expect. The Rangers do score less at home than on the road and Montas’ ERA is 1.54 runs lower in road starts. He does give up extra-base hits and has allowed a slugging percentage against of .430 or higher no matter where he pitches.

Montas has not been priced over $8,600 on FanDuel until tonight. As the higher-priced option sandwiched between pitchers facing each other, Montas has less appeal based on his inconsistent pitching. His ownership projects to be under five percent if you want to pay up to use him as a pivot.

Value

Kyle Gibson has been dodging regression all season with career-bests in Walks and Home Runs Per 9 Innings, BABIP, Left On Base percentage, Home Run-to-Flyball ratio, and fastball velocity. He has three games with an ERA north of 3.00 and has a 0.96 ERA at home. His $6,300 salary on DraftKings is embarrassingly low.

Fastballs

Adbert Alzolay is making his first start off the 10-day IL. He is recovered from a blister on his pitching hand is a full-go. The only concern is another one forming but would be surprised if one did so quickly. He is the top rated pitcher on FanDuel against a subpar Cleveland offense.

Since Tyler Mahle was molly-whopped by the Giants May 20, he is 4-0 with 36 strikeouts and has allowed seven earned runs in 29 1/3 innings pitched.

Notable Stack

After a four-game sweep of the White Sox, the Astros head to Baltimore as FanDuel’s top stack:

  • Yuli Gurriel (R)
  • Jose Altuve (R)
  • Michael Brantley (L)
  • Yordan Alvarez (L)

Total Salary: $14,600

Altuve is the top rated hitter on DraftKings, while the other three are top 10 on FanDuel. Another way to save salary is incorporate Chas McCormick over Yuli Gurriel, a $900 savings and a 1.5 drop in projected fantasy points.

Other Hitters

Kolten Wong is the top rated hitter on FanDuel. He is 4-for-11 with one home run and three RBI’s since

Ketel Marte has a five-game hitting streak that includes three multi-hit games. He is also slugging .672 against left-handed pitching in 2021. He faces lefty Brett Anderson in Arizona.

Astros-Orioles is the only game with a projected chance of rain. Both teams top the FantasyLabs Team Value Rating on both platforms. Their game is also the only one with a projected game total of 10 runs or more.

Nick Castellanos is slashing .545/.583/.864 against J.A. Happ in his career.
