MLB DFS Breakdown (Sunday, May 16): Freddy Peralta, Chris Bassitt Headline Best Pitching Choices

Sunday’s main slate features 10 games starting at 1:05 pm ET.

Pitchers

Not everyday we see a main slate with all pitchers priced below $10,000 on both DraftKings and FanDuel!

The four pitchers highest priced pitchers on FanDuel today are:

  • Freddy Peralta — MIL vs ATL
  • Chris Bassitt — OAK @ MIN
  • Nathan Eovaldi — BOS vs LAA
  • Kyle Gibson — TEX @ HOU

Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers is coming off a strong performance last outing as he allowed only one hit in seven innings, while striking out eight batters. He will be pitching against the Atlanta Braves as the Brewers will be hoping to avoid a home sweep. Through a month and a half of baseball, the Brewers starting pitching has been elite, whereas their bats have been quiet. Although Peralta is not the ace on the team, he truly is deserving of his high price based off his performances this year. With a total of 61 strikeouts in only 39 innings pitched, he will be looking to continue his fine form. Peralta is the highest rated pitcher on DraftKings this afternoon per Bales Model, while the Braves have the second lowest projected implied runs total on today’s slate of 3.4.

Chris Bassitt is a name not everyone may be familiar with who has been stellar in his last six starts. Although he has allowed two runs in each of those six starts, Bassitt has increased his strikeout numbers tremendously as the season has gone on. A 10-strikeout performance in his last game, Bassitt is facing the Minnesota Twins this afternoon who currently have the worst record in MLB (13-24).

Boston Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi has been extremely inconsistent to start his 2021 campaign, having strong as well as poor performances every other start. If he continues this early season trend the outlook is not bright for Eovaldi today.  Although he has not allowed a home run through his 45 innings pitched, he currently has a 4.20 era.  Eovaldi has a tough matchup this afternoon as he will be facing the Los Angeles Angels. A projected seven mph wind blowing out to center field is also not in his favor. Personally, I recommend fading Eovaldi on FanDuel due to his high price, however, may be one to consider on DraftKings.

The lowest rated pitcher on Bales Model for both DraftKings and FanDuel is Kyle Gibson from the Texas Rangers. Gibson will be pitching against the Houston Astros who are the second biggest favorites on the slate (-183). Projected weather is a concern in this game as there is a 48% chance of rain and a high 95% humidity.

Value

Bales Model projects the highest points/salary pitcher on both DraftKings and FanDuel is Robbie Ray from the Toronto Blue Jays. Ray has started the 2021 season strong throwing 39 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. Facing the Philadelphia Phillies, the Blue Jays are hoping for another stout performance from Ray as the top three AL East teams have all won seven of their last 10 games.

Another viable value pitcher to consider is Kyle Hendricks of the Chicago Cubs. Like Nathan Eovaldi, Hendricks has been very inconsistent through his first seven starts of the year.  If this trend continues, the Cubs pitcher is set for a big performance against the Detroit Tigers who have the second worst record in MLB (14-25).  Not only is the Tigers record bad, they also have the third most strikeouts in MLB (404). Hendricks is considered a contact pitcher but may be able to take advantage of the swing happy batters from Detroit.

Hitters

Notable Stack

Today’s top stack comes to you from the -191 Toronto Blue Jays:

  • Marcus Semien (R)
  • Bo Bichette (R)
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (R)
  • Teoscar Hernandez (R)

Projected to have the highest implied runs total of 5.9, the Blue Jays batters will be facing Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Chase Anderson. In his first seven starts of the year, Anderson has allowed at least a run in all of them, as well as a total of five home runs. On FanDuel, this stack will cost you $13.9k in salary and are projected for a combined 48.5 fantasy points.

Other Hitters

Bales Model projects the highest floor play, not previously mention, is J.D. Martinez from the Boston Red Sox.  Although his bat has been somewhat quiet the last 10 games, Martinez will be hoping to regain his April form as he hit nine home runs in the first month of the season. The Red Sox have the second highest implied runs total on the slate of 5.3.

Another batter to consider from the same game is Michael Chavis. Chavis is the highest rated batter today on Bales Model for both DraftKings and FanDuel due to his extremely low price. Even though he has struck out nine times in his 22 at bats on the year, Chavis is very valuable batting leadoff for the team that has scored the most runs in MLB (212).

Value

As always, here is a list of value batters to consider while completing your lineups:

  • Miguel Cabrera
  • Jean Segura
  • Rowdy Tellez
  • Kevin Newman
  • Nomar Mazara
