As the 2024 fantasy football season approaches, experts Sean Koerner and Chris Raybon agree there’s no debate as to whom the no. 1 running back is — it’s Christian McCaffrey. However, there is debate when it comes to RB2.

Breece Hall of the New York Jets and Bijan Robinson of the Atlanta Falcons are both top contenders, each with unique attributes that make them appealing targets if you’re looking to draft an early running back.

In this episode of the “Fantasy Flex” podcast, Raybon and Sean Koerner weighed in on the debate.

Koerner emphasized the deserving nature of Breece Hall, saying, “He played all 17 games, so he finished as the RB4. So having said that, yeah, I think he has the potential to be even better this year”. Hall is coming off a strong 2023 season, and the Jets’ offseason upgrades, including improved offensive line additions, solidify his standing.

Meanwhile, Raybon shared his thoughts on Bijan Robinson, highlighting the critical factor of new coaching staff adjustments in Atlanta. “I think the new coaching staff knows what they have in Bijan Robinson and will feature him a lot more than last year. So I think this year he certainly warrants a top-three pick”, noted Raybon.

De’Von Achane is a polarizing figure in the fantasy football landscape. His immense talent and fit within Miami’s scheme make him an intriguing option, but there are certainly risks to consider.

Strengths

• Talent and Production: Achane’s explosive playmaking ability and high points per game highlight his potential as a top-tier back. His talent was evident last season, and if he maintains or improves on that performance, he could be a game-changer.

• Scheme Fit: The Miami Dolphins’ scheme, under Mike McDaniel, who comes from the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree, is known for its success with speedy, smaller backs. Achane fits this profile perfectly, making the scheme a great match for his skill set.

• Top-Five Potential: If Achane stays healthy and continues to see significant volume alongside Raheem Mostert, he could very well finish the season as a top-5 running back. His big-play ability and role in the offense give him a high ceiling.

• Injury History: Achane’s rookie season was marred by injuries, including a knee issue that caused him to miss six games and toe/rib injuries that he played through. While it’s not certain that he’s prone to injuries, the physical nature of his position combined with his smaller frame raises concerns.

• Scheme Risks: The run scheme utilized by McDaniel and influenced by Shanahan’s approach often relies on trust in the offensive line and can lead to higher injury risk for running backs. Smaller, speedy backs like Achane can be more susceptible to injuries due to the demanding nature of the scheme and the physical hits involved.

• Volatility: Given his potential for big plays and the inherent injury risk, Achane can be a more volatile pick. This volatility makes him a better candidate for Best Ball formats, where you benefit from his high upside without needing to manage his weekly health and performance.
