Entering Tuesday, we are a perfect 4-0 in our game previews involving the Cleveland Cavaliers since Ohio officially started taking legal sports wagers on January 1. Tonight, Donovan Mitchell returns to Salt Lake City to play his former team, the Utah Jazz, who traded him during the offseason for a package that included Lauri Markkanen and Collin Sexton. Ahead of tip-off oddsmakers have Cleveland priced them as 2.5-point road favorites on the spread.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Hard times away from home
The Cavaliers currently own the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference, but they would be fighting for home court advantage in the playoffs if they were able to translate some of their success at home to their road games. In 22 home games, Cleveland is 18-4, outscoring their opponents by 8.1 points per 100 possessions. In stark contrast, this group is only 8-11 away from Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, outscoring their opponents by only 1.2 points per 100 possessions.
Though Cleveland took care of business against an injury-depleted Phoenix Suns team in their most recent contest, bettors should not mistakenly believe that this unit has completely remedied their struggles away from home. In eight road games against west coast teams during the first half of the campaign, Cleveland is 3-5 straight up.
Garland removed from injury report
Per Chris Fedor, Darius Garland was wearing a black wrap on his thumb during his pregame workout prior to playing the Suns – a wrap that Garland has publicly referred to as “annoying.” Still, the young guard delivered 22 points in a victory in the valley, and tonight has been removed from the injury report entirely for the first time since he suffered this injury nearly two weeks ago. Bettors should still be mindful of Garland’s ability to shoot from the perimeter, but it appears that he is trending towards full health.
Utah Jazz
Regression to expectations
Following a torrid start to the season, the Jazz have come crashing down to earth with an 8-17 record across their last 25 games. In that stretch of action, Utah ranks 20th in Net Rating, having been outscored by 1.3 points per 100 possessions.
Still, they have remained a competitive home team of late, with a 6-6 record in their last 12 games at Vivint Arena. Their six wins include victories over notable opponents, such as the New Orleans Pelicans (twice), Golden State Warriors, Indiana Pacers, and Los Angeles Clippers.
Lauri Markkanen, an All-Star in the making
The forgotten man in the “Donovan Mitchell trade,” Lauri Markkanen is averaging a career-high 24.5 points per game this season. He has increased his scoring in each of the last three months, averaging 22.0 points in November, 26.8 points in December, and 31.5 points in four games to begin January.
Notably, Markkanen has seen his role in the offense continue to grow month-by-month as his teammates and coaching staff become more comfortable viewing him as the centerpiece in this offensive attack. Facing his old-team on Tuesday, he could have a little bit of extra motivation in the tank.
Cavs vs. Jazz Pick & Prediction
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been a strong defensive team on the road this season, but they have posted a strong defensive efficiency rating in spite of the fact that they rank 28th in opponent three-point percentage in 19 away games. Markkanen is averaging 7.2 three-point attempts per game this season and is shooting 45.3% from beyond-the-arc in 17 home games. Expect him to have a strong performance this evening, take the over on his points total.
- PICK: Lauri Markkanen OVER 25.5 Points
