Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson OUT

Lamar Jackson has not practiced since injuring his knee in Week 13. In his absence, Baltimore’s offense ranked 26th in EPA overall, 28th in dropback EPA, and 13th in rush EPA – failing to score more than 17 points in any individual contest.

Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley is dealing with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder, but resumed throwing at practice on Thursday, per Jamison Hensley – the first time that he had been seen throwing passes since January 1. Asked on Friday if he will start on Sunday, Huntley said that “it’s a game-time decision.” If Huntley is unable to suit-up on Sunday, third-string signal caller Anthony Brown will get the nod.

Marcus Peters returns to the field

On Sunday, cornerback Marcus Peters will return to the field for the first time since Week 15. Per Pro Football Focus, he has been significantly better than league average at his position this season, and has finished in the top-15 in defense grade among cornerbacks three times since 2016.

In the wild-card round, Baltimore will have five defensive backs who finished the year graded better than league average at their position healthy for the first time in nearly a month. There is reason to believe that this defense can put together an impressive showing against the Bengals’ high-powered offensive attack.

Cincinnati Bengals

Offensive line banged up

Both starting members on the right side of the Bengals’ offensive line will be out on Sunday, with right tackle La’el Collins and right guard Alex Cappa both on the mend. Cappa, who allowed only three sacks in 724 pass blocking snaps this year, is the most notable loss for this group. His backup, Max Scharping, has played only six regular season snaps in 2022. Last year, with the Houston Texans, Scharping allowed two sacks and 19 quarterback pressures in only 400 pass blocking snaps.

Secondary unit vulnerable

From Week 1 to Week 5, games in which cornerback Chidobe Awuzie played at least 60 snaps, Cincinnati’s defense ranked 7th in EPA overall, 8th in dropback EPA, and 15th in rush EPA. Since that point, the Bengals’ defense ranks 11th in EPA overall, 16th in dropback EPA, and 13th in rush EPA.

Starting cornerbacks Eli Apple and Cam Taylor-Britt both finished the regular season ranked 71st or worse out of 122 players at their position in coverage grade, per Pro Football Focus. Fortunately for this secondary unit, they will be facing an anemic passing attack, whether Huntley or Brown starts for Baltimore.
