Battling the Altitude: Do Road Teams Struggle in Their First Game at Coors?

Our new Trends tool is going to make my life so much easier. I write a ton of content, but I write pretty quickly and really the majority of my “writing” time is spent on research.

I just saw someone on Twitter talking about whether or not road teams at Coors Field struggle in their first game there. This isn’t a new topic, but the idea is that away teams might take some time to adjust to the altitude.

This is the sort of topic that might have taken me at least a decent chunk of time to research in the past. Well, I saw this question posed on Twitter at 11:16am. Using Trends, I found my answer at 11:18am. Not even shitting you. It’s so sick.

Road Value at Coors Field

As we’d expect, road teams offer lots of value at Coors Field. Here’s the Plus/Minus for DraftKings batters on road teams playing at Coors Field (all games) since 2014.

Coors Away 1

Pretty clear, with road teams performing better than you’d expect (given their salaries) in almost every single series. Here are the exact per-game numbers.

Coors Away 2

In all games, road batters have a stout Plus/Minus of 1.70 points on DraftKings when playing at Coors Field. Obvious value.

Now here’s just the first game.

Coors Away 3

Since the start of the 2014 season, we’re looking at dramatically reduced batter value in the first game of a team’s road trip to Coors Field (as compared to the rest of the series).

So do batters take time to adjust to the Coors effect? At least since 2014, the data seems to support that idea.

FYI: No lie, it is 11:30am. I just saw a cool topic on Twitter, did the research, and posted this article in 14 minutes. Get off me.
