Here’s a breakdown of one-game DFS contests for the Week 9 Thursday Night Football matchup featuring the San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals at 8:20 p.m. ET on FOX, NFL Network, and Amazon Prime.
Cash Game Strategy
UPDATE: With Damiere Byrd and Marquise Goodwin INACTIVE and new reports surfacing that Kenyan Drake will get a lot of run, the best cash construction on DraftKings is Garoppolo-Coleman-Breida-Murray-Drake-Kendrick Bourne. On FanDuel, it’s Garoppolo-Murray-Coleman-Breida-Dante Pettis.
Both teams have been beset by injuries at running back: Arizona’s Chase Edmonds (hamstring) is out and David Johnson (back) is a game-time decision, while San Francisco’s Matt Breida (ankle) and Raheem Mostert (knee) are questionable. Even if Johnson sits for the Cardinals, head coach Kliff Kingsbury has stated that newly acquired former Dolphin Kenyan Drake will be part of a committee.
With all of the uncertainty at running back, as well as the lack of viable options in the lowest salary tier on DraftKings, deviating from jamming in as many RBs as possible and instead optimizing for value looks like the best bet on this slate.
The must-plays are Jimmy Garoppolo, who has the highest floor and median projections in our DraftKings Showdown Models, as well as Kyler Murray (second in both), and Tevin Coleman (third in floor, fourth in median) fresh off his four-touchdown outburst against Carolina. Jimmy G’s pass attempts have been capped all season with a high of just 33 and a low of 21, and that could be the case again with the 49ers favored by 10, but their committee approach at running back still leaves him as the highest-floor DFS option for this game.
The optimal construction to fill out a lineup with Jimmy G in the MVP slot plus Murray and Coleman is George Kittle in a matchup against Arizona’s bottom-ranked defense in Football Outsiders’ DVOA vs. tight ends; Robbie Gould, whose median projection rivals the non-Coleman RBs; and Damiere Byrd, who maintained his role as the No. 3 wide receiver with an 88% snap rate even as Christian Kirk returned last week.
On FanDuel, Garoppolo, Murray, and Coleman pair best with Breida and Byrd if Breida is active; otherwise, Gould and Marquise Goodwin, who figures to resume his role as the No. 3 wide receiver after missing the previous game for personal reasons.
