On Monday evening, new sports bettors in Ohio will have an opportunity to bet on their hometown team when the Chicago Bulls visit the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
New bettors will quickly learn that injury reports are important when wagering on the NBA, with Darius Garland and Evan Mobley both uncertain to take the floor tonight.
Below, let’s take a look at how these injuries will impact the action, and whether or not the Cavaliers are a smart play, listed as 4-point home favorites on the spread.
Chicago Bulls
Difficulty on the boards
Chicago has won five of their last seven contests entering play, but it is doubtful that they will be able to sustain their recent hot stretch if they are unable to improve in the rebounding department. Since December 20, the Bulls rank 23rd in the NBA in rebounding percentage. In their first meeting against Cleveland back in October, this group was out-rebounded 48-35 in a 128-96 blowout on their home floor. When these two teams met on New Year’s Eve, the Bulls were once again defeated on their home court, and were out-rebounded 50-40, despite the fact that one of Cleveland’s top rebounders, Evan Mobley did not play.
Lavine getting healthier
Early in the season, Zach LaVine was not healthy and it was evident by his production on the court, averaging only 20.5 points on an inefficient 39.9 percent shooting from the floor during November. As his health has improved, so have his numbers. In December, LaVine averaged 24.5 points on 52.1 percent shooting from the floor.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Cavaliers dominant at home
Entering play, only four teams in the league have a better Net Rating at home than the Cavaliers. In 20 home games, Cleveland is 16-4 and has outscored their opponents by 8.3 points per 100 possessions. Their success has largely been a product of domination in the half court in these spots, ranking dead-last in pace in home games, where they have let their defense do the heavy lifting for them.
Garland doubtful, Mobley questionable
Darius Garland and Evan Mobley are two of Cleveland’s top three scoring threats this year, with Garland also leading the team in assists as the offense’s top facilitator. Nevertheless, Cleveland has proven themselves capable of performing well even in their absence. Per Cleaning the Glass, the Cavaliers still rank in the 95th percentile in Net Rating when both Garland and Mobley are off of the floor this season. If Mobley, listed as questionable, is able to play, his presence will only increase Cleveland’s advantage on the boards.
Bulls vs. Cavaliers Prediction and Picks
Simply, the Cleveland Cavaliers are an extremely poor matchup for the Chicago Bulls. In two matchups so far this season, Cleveland has out-rebounded Chicago by 23 on the glass – winning both contests. Though the Cavaliers have injury questions heading into this contest, they are the side worth taking for bettors in this spot.
