Butterfield Bermuda Championship PGA DFS Stats Preview: Course Fits, GPP Picks, and Values

The PGA TOUR heads to Southampton, Bermuda this week to play the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Club.

Port Royal Golf Club is a 6,828-yard, Par 71 layout featuring Bermudagrass greens. This is the fourth edition of the tournament and marks the third time it will be the primary TOUR stop for the week (it was previously an alternate event). The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones.

The Bermuda Championship field is relatively weak but will feature some interesting names on TOUR such as Garrick Higgo, Thomas Detry, John Daly, Seamus Power and Lucas Glover.

For contests on DraftKings, I will be breaking down the key stats (past 24 rounds) and selecting golfers from different price tiers to provide flexibility for a DFS lineup.

And if you missed it, we added two new metrics in our models — Perfect% and SimLeverage. You can find an explainer on those metrics here.

The cliff notes version is that you can use SimLeverage to quickly find leverage plays in tournaments, while Perfect% is excellent for finding the best price-considered plays for cash games.

For large-field tournaments, you can utilize our Lineup Optimizer to effortlessly create up to 150 lineups or use our Lineup Builder if you like to hand-build your lineups.

This analysis may reference Strokes Gained, a set of proprietary metrics generated by the PGA TOUR using millions of data points to calculate how many shots, on average, it takes a player to get the ball in the hole from every distance and situation.

Strokes Gained is now available in the FantasyLabs PGA Models.

Fairways Gained

The rough at Port Royal Golf Club can actually be quite unforgiving. It will be important to target accurate golfers. As evidenced by both Brendon Todd and Brian Gay winning here, distance off the tee won’t be much of a factor.

  • High-end target: Aaron Rai $10,100 (1st Fairways Gained)
  • Mid-range target: Lucas Glover $7,500 (4th Fairways Gained)
  • Value target: Vaughn Taylor— $6,600 (3rd Fairways Gained)

Strokes Gained: Approach

The weaker the field, the more I tend to rely on statistics. Strokes Gained: Approach is a great way to measure current form and shows who is the most dialed in with their irons.

  • High-end target: Aaron Rai $10,100 (6th Strokes Gained: Approach)
  • Mid-range target: Adam Schenk— $8,700 (1st Strokes Gained: Approach)
  • Value target: Ben Griffin— $7,200 (5th Strokes Gained: Approach)

Strokes Gained: Short Game

The first three editions of the tournament have been dominated by the players who have the best short games on TOUR. An added emphasis on who’s the best around the green and putting should help narrow down the player pool.

  • High-end target: Stephan Jaeger— $9,300 (6th Strokes Gained: Short Game)
  • Mid-range target: Scott Piercy— $7,300 (4th Strokes Gained: Short Game)
  • Value target: Brian Gay— $6,700 (2nd Strokes Gained: Short Game)

Birdies or Better Gained

In 2019, we saw the winner of this event at 24 under par. The past two years, extreme winds made scoring difficult. Regardless of the weather this time around, the winner will likely have plenty of birdies.

  • High-end target: Thomas Detry— $10,500 (6th Birdies or Better Gained)
  • Mid-range target: Will Gordon— $8,600 (8th Birdies or Better Gained)
  • Value target: Ben Griffin— $7,200 (1st Birdies or Better Gained)

Strokes Gained Putting: Bermudagrass

This is an event that could turn into a putting contest. If the majority of the field is hitting greens in regulation, it might come down to whoever can heat up with the putter.  Bermudagrass specialists will have the best chance to do just that at Port Royal.

  • High-end target: Thomas Detry— $10,500 (3rd Strokes Gained: Putting (Bermudagrass)
  • Mid-range target: Adam Long— $8,900 (5th Strokes Gained: Putting (Bermudagrass)
  • Value target: Brian Gay— $6,700 (2nd Strokes Gained: Putting (Bermudagrass)
