Underdog Fantasy Tight End Values for Best Ball

Hockenson tore his ACL/MCL in late December last season, which means he is in a race against the clock to be ready for Week 1. I think his current ADP is assuming he will for sure miss 1-2 games and potentially open the season on the PUP. However, he is reportedly ahead of schedule in rehab and it seems like the chances he will be ready for Week 1 have gone up slightly. It makes sense to roll the dice on him while his stock could be at the lowest it will be this offseason, assuming he continues to avoid any setbacks.

Coming off of a promising rookie season, Okonkwo was a popular TE1/2 sleeper heading into last year. He struggled early in the season and was the TE35 Weeks 1-7. However, when Will Levis was under center in Weeks 8-15, Okonkwo was the TE25. I think he’s a potential buy low candidate considering the Titans will likely be much more pass heavy in the post-Derrick Henry era. Backup Josh Whyle should see enough playing time to make Chig a fairly volatile fantasy option in traditional fantasy leagues, but his big play upside gives him a boost in best ball formats.

Dulcich’s 2023 season was wiped out due to a foot injury and he was only able to appear in two games. It’s unclear how he would have fit in to Sean Payton’s scheme, but with Jerry Jeudy no longer with the team, we could see Dulchich, who is more of a pass catching TE option, see more playing time. His upside will likely be limited with rookie QB Bo Nix, but I think he’s worth the gamble in the TE36 range.

It seems likely that Darren Waller will announce his retirement soon, which is why the Giants selected Johnson in the 4th round. He is arguably the most athletic TE in this year’s class and struggles as a blocker, so he would be the logical replacement for Darren Waller. I’m expecting his ADP to shoot up if/when Waller’s retirement is made official (it’s still not 100% yet) so now would be the perfect time to invest in the rookie TE.
